Sidon Municipality Intensifies Cleaning and Drainage Maintenance Efforts in Cooperation with Local Partners to Address the Pressure of Displacement on Infrastructure.
Sidon Municipality – Media Office.
Sidon Municipality announced the continuation and intensification of its routine daily operations aimed at maintaining the cleanliness of the city and the readiness of its infrastructure, amid the additional challenges and heavy pressure imposed by the displacement crisis on public facilities. According to estimates by the Disaster and Crisis Management Unit, the city’s population has increased by more than 40,000 people.
In coordination with Municipal Council member Youssef Touma, volunteer teams, alongside municipal workers, continue street-cleaning campaigns and the enhancement of waste collection mechanisms across various neighborhoods of the city. These efforts are the result of effective cooperation with Rajab Jbeili Agricultural Company, Nabaa Association, the Development for People and Nature Association (DPNA), the Mohammad Zeidan Development Association, and IBC Company. In addition, NTCC is exerting extra efforts to collect waste from containers, which have recorded an increase of approximately 30 percent, placing additional pressure on its crews. Nevertheless, the company continues to coordinate with the municipality and adhere to the emergency plan to prevent the accumulation of waste on the city’s streets. Furthermore, the Municipality’s Emergency Maintenance Unit is carrying out regular and intensified operations to clear sewage lines and stormwater drainage channels. This proactive measure comes in response to waste accumulation and the immense pressure caused by the sudden population increase resulting from displacement, requiring daily technical follow-up to ensure that networks do not become blocked and to prevent flooding or environmental crises within residential neighborhoods and around shelter centers. Mr. Touma emphasized that: “Preserving the city’s civilized appearance and safeguarding its infrastructure is a duty that does not cease despite all the difficult circumstances. The integration of efforts between municipal workers, the private sector, and civil society organizations is the guarantee for maintaining essential services during this exceptional crisis.”
Sidon Municipality also calls on residents and newcomers to the city to cooperate with cleaning crews and to dispose of waste in designated areas, helping technical teams carry out their duties and reducing the burden on the sewage network.
