One month after the displacement crisis caused by the ongoing Israeli aggression began, Sidon Mayor Engineer Mustafa Hijazi chaired two extensive meetings at the Municipal Palace, attended by members of the Municipal Council, the head of the Operations Room, and volunteer teams, with the aim of evaluating field performance and discussing the sustainability of relief efforts. The meetings included separate and in-depth sessions with principals of public schools currently serving as shelters in the city, as well as representatives of civil society organizations entrusted with the direct management of these centers in coordination with the municipality.
Eng. Hijazi reviewed with participants the report on the first month of the emergency response, focusing on the assessment of management mechanisms, the capacity of shelters to accommodate displaced families, and the distribution of responsibilities among school administrations, NGOs, and volunteers. Discussions also covered field realities and the logistical challenges faced by the shelters, particularly regarding infrastructure, sanitation, the provision of meals, and medical needs. Emphasis was also placed on data archiving and ensuring the accuracy of daily statistics to guarantee fair distribution and transparency in information provided to donor agencies. The meetings concluded with a shared vision for the coming phase, based on shifting from an “emergency response” approach to “sustainable management.” Key priorities include strengthening direct communication channels between shelter managers and the Operations Room to address obstacles promptly, developing psychosocial support programs and educational activities for children to compensate for learning losses, and enhancing health and environmental monitoring to prevent problems arising from overcrowding. At the conclusion of the meetings, Eng. Hijazi praised the “high national spirit” demonstrated by school principals and civil society organizations, stating: “After a month of resilience shown by Sidon and its people in hosting our displaced families, it was necessary to pause and assess our efforts. Sidon, through its schools and organizations, has proven that it is one united body. Today, we are not merely managing a crisis; we are building a model of solidarity. The coming phase requires endurance and more precise organization, and we remain committed to providing all possible support to safeguard the dignity of the displaced and preserve our educational facilities.”
